Abstract

»Technologies of mind« can be understood as the different ways in which symbolic media are used to articulate thought. These media are given as facts in a culture, and their internal structure enters into all our acts of articulation – i.e. of our feeling, perceiving, and thinking. In this perspective our entire intellectual life can be regarded as a dynamic interplay between the symbolic repertoire of a culture and the way that individual behavior relates to this repertoire in the effort to it articulation. That is why we only can inquire into »mind« after we have taken note of the culture within which it has formed.
